About BasedMIP

BasedMIP is a new paradigm for stochastic climate and ecological modeling, with a focus on the development of scenarios that can be used as part of participatory planning activities.

BasedMIP is being developed through a collaborative process between UC Davis student researchers and faculty across disciplines, in STEM, the social sciences, the arts and humanities.

Presently, BasedMIP is undergoing prototyping and testing, and is slated to be "soft launched" in the 2025-26 academic year. All metrics, indicators, and modeling artifacts in BasedMIP will be evaluated for accuracy, ethics, and legibility.

Once completed, BasedMIP will offer tools that allow users to design their own scenarios, bringing climate and ecological data to life through a "learning through making" process.

Designed for integration with the C-MIP7, BasedMIP data will be configured to allow incorporation into leading climate and environmental modeling regimes.

Drawing upon an analysis offered by media scholar Katherine Buse, we treat ecological models as a form of media, and the work of creating them as composing a work of interactive nonfiction science fiction.
